MY PROCESS

My general process heavily relies on the double diamond methodology

WHY THE DOUBLE DIAMOND METHODOLOGY

The double diamond methodology is a thorough process of designing problem-solving solutions which focus on the needs of people.

The purpose of the process is to:

  • Generate a vast amount of ideas
  • Turn ideas into prototypes
  • Share the prototypes with people to gather feedback
  • Find a final solution and build it for release

STARTING A NEW PROJECT

When starting a project I determine what the client wants and from this try to define the short, mid and long term goals.

1. DISCOVER

This phase is used to observe how people interact with current products related to the project at hand. It's neccessary to diarise/record observations. From the data recieved, it's time to generate ideas and determine who the target audience is. By utilizing surveys, it's possible to get important statistical data from the target audience. Quick visualisation methods are used to get a general idea through sketches or whiteboards. Secondary research is done to find competitors, niches, trends and related material. Finally, identifying hopes and fears will help predict what will not work and find alternative implementations.

Methods:

  • Empathy Maps
  • Venn Diagram
  • Personas
  • Interviews

Tools:

  • Hotjar
  • Google Optimize
  • Optimizely

2. DEFINE

Defining stage is used to prioritise information and communicate with a team and to get an understanding of project challenges. The gathered materials and findings (from the discovery stage) are used to define a strategy to work with. Focus groups are used to discuss the current project. All discussions should be recorded for development purposes. A scoring system is used to determine which ideas work best. If working in a team, it's important to compare notes, prioritize information to assist in finding a starting point. It's then time to find problematic parts of ideation and strategy to understand the audience's motivations and barriers. User journeys of real situations are created to find strong and week points of the product.

Methods:

  • Card Sorting
  • Surveys and Questionnaires

Tools:

  • Figjam
  • Mural
  • Miro

3. DEVELOP

This is my favourite part. I start brainstorming of design concepts and testing. I then create personas of group of users that will be using the product and create detailed scenarios to assist / foresee functionality of the product. Sometimes it helps to role-playing interactions between person and product helps refine design of product. I would then utilize a service blueprint to visualise the whole user journey, touchpoints, channels and related services. Then on to designing a physical phototype based using prototype software.

Methods:

  • Role Play
  • Behaviour Sampling
  • Prototyping

Tools:

  • Figma
  • Sketch
  • Adobe XD

4. DELIVER

This final step of product creation. Phasing can be used to test product on smaller audience before moving to a larger audience. Repeated testing should be done to ensure the product is of high quality standard and no techinical issues exist.

Methods:

  • Phase Testing
  • Final Testing
  • Feedback
  • Method Banks

PROJECT EVALUATION

After project hand over I determine if short, mid and long term goals have been met.
